Hidradenitis Suppurativa
Hidradenitis suppurativa is an inflammatory disease of sweat glands in the skin. It usually affects hair-bearing areas, such as the armpits and groin, but can also affect the buttocks and under the breasts. Patients with hidradenitis will develop nodules (lumps) and sinus tracts (tunnels and holes). These can become infected and drain pus.
Hidradenitis is best treated with anti-inflammatory medications that are usually prescribed by dermatologists or primary care doctors. If there is infection, then antibiotics are needed as well.
Hidradenitis sometimes requires a surgeon to lance the nodule once it becomes infected. This allows the wound to drain and the infection to clear up. Sometimes the tunnels are opened up surgically to address infection. Surgeons can also provide wound care, as the nodules and tunnels usually create open wounds that are difficult to heal.
Sometimes, when Hidradenitis is severe, the area may need a bigger surgery to remove all of the affected tissue. The wound may need simple closure and sometimes it will need a complicated closure, like a skin graft or a tissue flap.
